The memorial atop of 11,053 ft. Mammoth Mountain and the view from same this Wednesday.
On Tuesday April 3, 2006 these three brave Mammoth Ski Patrollers died while attempting to protect the skiing public from a volcanic vent on Mammoth Mountain. They fell into a 50+ foot crevasse while moving snow fences and died instantly from the toxic fumes. The chamber and its gas bubble were concealed by the 620 inches of snow on the mountain that year.
Its an honor to salute these brave gentlemen.
As always the most beautiful of mountain settings or vistas can be very dangerous and may even be deadly environments, as well.
Mammoth Mountain is part of the Long Valley Caldera. The Long Valley Caldera is a 20 mile by 11 mile volcano that blew up about 760,000 year ago.In an ongoing miracle Senator Ted Kennedy returned to the US Senate Wednesday to vote "Aye" on the long-stalled Medicare legislation. Way to go Teddy.
