The Entertainment Capital of the World is a police murder capital also.

On April 12th, 1999 Las Vegas Metropolitan policeman Bruce Gentner fired 14 bullets from his .40 caliber weapon at an unarmed John Paul Perrin, hitting the man 6 times and needless to say killing him on the spot. Three of those bullets hit Perrin in the back, including the one the went through his heart, killing him.

Perrin was dribbling a basketball when he was stopped by Gentner about 11:15 PM near the corner of Rainbow Blvd. and Tropicana Ave. which is 6 or 7 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip. Gentner killed Perrin because he [Perrin] reach for his crack pipe.

In December 1996 Las Vegas police officer Ron Mortensen killed Daniel Mendosa while off duty and was later convicted of a drive by shooting. Mortensen's partner Christopher Brady seems to also be involved but hasn't been prosecuted.

Over the last 15 years over 100 people have been killed by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Many were people of color. In Clark County, Nevada [where Las Vegas is located] police-involved killings are brought before a coroner's inquest jury to determine if an officer was criminally negligent. In the 84 previous inquests since 1976, police have been found negligent only once. And that finding was later overturned by a Clark County grand jury.
