Most Crimes in today's civilized world are actually violations of religious Sins that moralistic legislators have made unlawful.
It is a national disgrace that the United States has a larger segment of its population in prison than any other civilized nation in the world.
A disproportionately large number of those in prison in the US are people of color who are guilty of drug offenses.What exactly is crime.
In the writers opinion harming or killing people is definitely a crime. Cheating or defrauding others is a crime.
Sexual misconduct is also a crime.
In sexual relations no means no, sex must be consensual or its assault.
The age of sexual majority varies from 12 years on up in today's real world.
Puritanical Americans are probably horrified at northern Europe's liberal proclivity, where 14 is the age of sexual majority.Not too long ago activities like dancing, inter-sex gatherings, smoking and theater-going were crimes in some locales and expressly forbidden by many religions.
Of course drinking, gambling and sexing fit into that category too.You can't legislate morality
Most people are going to do want they want. And they will go underground to do it if that is necessary.
About 80 years ago those very wise souls in the US Congress decided to make alcohol illegal. A rather foolhardy decision. Drinking and distributing alcoholic beverages all of a sudden became a crime in the United States of America.
Prohibition quickly caused the enormous rise in the power of the Mob, also much killing and many other assaults against people and property. The demand for alcohol didn't just go away. New company's [racketeers] took over the distribution.
Prohibition made the government look very silly. Why? Because practically everybody broke the law.
Today booze is legal again and alcoholism is a huge social problem throughout the world. But liquor is a huge, very profitable business.There pretty much has always been laws against gambling. Why? Moral bias. Righteous and religious types didn't want the public wagering. They don't want people having fun doing things the Church disapproves of.
Gambling can be addictive.
Gambling was only legal in Nevada. The new "Las Vegas" was founded by the Mafia in the late 1940's. In the 1970's the local corporations and politicians ran the Mob out of Vegas and it became a chic place to visit and its economy began to grow . The number of states permitting gambling has risen sharply in the last 25 years. People like gambling so the bureaucrats have smartly now included that SIN in their tax collecting strategies. Many county's, cities and states balance their budgets with gaming taxes. Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world, is the fastest growing city in the United States. Sinning is now big business. It's also quite profitable. And it's a CASH business.Why are Sex and Drugs Crimes?
Sex
Professions like prostitution and pandering function legally in many country's of the world [when participants are over 18]. Most of those country's sex crime rate is much lower than that of the United State's. Street prostitution is also virtually non-existent outside most of those country's "Red Light Districts". Amsterdam's "Red Light District" is a major tourist attraction in that Dutch city.
The State of Nevada has had legalized prostitution for many years in its rural county's. In some rural Nevada county's these Houses of Sin are the largest taxpayers. A former prostitute is a well known politician in Nevada.
The city of San Francisco is looking to find a way to open a European style "Red Light District". They feel that's the best, most civilized answer to the sex business problem in their attractive Bay Area city.Drugs
Alcohol is a powerful Drug, yet its legal in the United States and most of the rest of the planet. In the US, Alcohol causes 50,000 drunk driving deaths each year, also countless auto accidents and millions of broken family's. The Fed's tax it and big business primarily controls its distribution.
A majority of violence is related to excess alcohol consumption. Europe's soccer tragedies have all been caused by drunk hooligans. This is true through out the world.Opium and Marijuana were both freely used as well as grown in the United States during the 19th Century. Morphine became widely accepted after the Civil War and Heroin was available late in the 1800's; all of these narcotics were legally distributed and sold by doctors, pharmacy's and food merchants. In the 1800's Morphine was prescribed much like Valium and Prozac are today. It was legal to grow opium in the US up until 1942.
The criminalization of Marijuana in the United States began in the late 1930's. Up until that point in time it was legal to pay your taxes in HEMP. HEMP was used to make rope, cloth, clothes and paper. Important stuff. Presidents Washington and Jefferson were both HEMP farmers. Many city's and county's are named for HEMP like, Hempstead, Long Island. Marijuana was the drug that British doctors prescribed the most in the 1800's. Marijuana prohibition was mostly a racial bias against the blacks and Mexicans, much like opium's prohibition came about as a way to persecute the Chinese.
Marijuana prevents nausea and allows Aids and Cancer patients to eat and keep down food. Most of Aid's and Cancer victims actually die from malnutrition because of the nausea from radiation treatments. Arizona, California Oregon and several other states have voted for Medical Marijuana laws.Soft Drugs are legal in the Netherlands. The Dutch categorize a Soft Drugs as Hashish, Marijuana and mushrooms. Soft drugs are legally sold in coffee shops throughout the country. Hard Drug pushers are criminals in the Netherlands, which is also known as Holland. Hard Drug [Coke, Crack, Heroin, Opium, Meth etc.] addicts are treated as medical and social problems in the Netherlands not as criminals.
The Dutch have negligible Drug crime in their country and the most dynamic economy in Europe. Holland has several million people who want to immigrate to their prosperous lowland country of about 16 million. The Dutch own or control Shell Oil, KLM, Heineken, Unilever, Philips, Polygram.
The Dutch government has not lost credibility with its citizens on the drug issue like the American government has.
Very few homeless are seen on the streets of Dutch city's.Soft drug users, Hard core dope fiends and pushers are all treated as criminals in the US. Putting these non-violent people in penitentiary's has increased prison populations almost 10 fold. This is costing a lot of money. And it's not working. Also by incarcerating the non-violent drug users with hard core criminals like murders, the US is hardening its criminal base.
A curious note is that the sentence for the crime of distributing crack is 10 times more severe than the sentence for distributing cocaine. The fact that crack is primarily used by blacks and cocaine is primarily used by whites has nothing to do with that particular law I suppose.
