The 1st Amendment to the Constitution reads; Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The Founding Fathers of our country mistrusted Churches and were suspicious of both a strong Military and a strong Federal Government. Why? Corruption and Greed.
The Constitutions authors worried about subversion of our moral values. Initially they set up a representative democracy based upon tolerance to all viewpoints because they saw what forcing a single point of view on the masses had had in Europe. The country's architects were extremely concerned because millions died in the Christians Crusades, those most righteous of all murders.

The originators of this country thought; Government should a servant of the people not a tyrant and the maker of privileges.

The most important written document existing since the beginning of human civilization is the US Constitution. It begins with these words:
"We the People of the United States,
in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

The new US Constitution was quickly ratified by our country's citizens and States but these folks also immediately demanded numerous individual and personal rights. Hence the Bill of Rights.
The real significance of the 1st Amendment and the Bill of Rights is that they protect our [us, the masses] freedom of speech and the views of all the minorities, as well as the opinion of the majority.
Constitutionally, the minority's perspectives and viewpoints are to be tolerated in these United States of America. The US was supposed to be a safe haven for all viewpoints. Is it still that way today?
You may think that someone has to be a weird whacked-out druggie to have their idea or viewpoint. But these people have a constitutional right to their opinion.
ALSO, Every citizen of the United states has a constitutional right to be stupid.

If there is a God, SHE created all men equal and all their numerous beliefs also equal.

Righteousness has raised it's ugly head in the world, again. First with the fundamentalist Ayatollah in Iran, and most of the Arab world. Then fanatical fundamentalists Christians began attacking the diverse fabric of US society. Remember:
Righteous Christians are responsible for the most sanctimonious crime of all, Sex abuse of children. Between Pedophile Catholic Priests, the Mormons or LDS [Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints] and almighty Southerners, between 70 % and 80 % of the US population has probably been sexually molested.
