This seminar - workshop will be held in the
Long Valley Caldera which is near Mammoth Lakes, California. Mammoth Lakes is the home of
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and Mountain Bike Park.
Long Valley is about 275 miles north of Los Angeles. The
Long Valley Caldera is also about 150 miles south of Reno Nevada. This is an active
volcanic area. Long Valley is very prone to earthquakes and has many natural hot springs
as well as being the home of Crowley Lake. Lake Crowley is legendary throughout the world
for it's trout fishing. Crowley Lake is home to numerous 40 - 50 pound trout.
The Caldera "shakes" a little daily and regularly has 3.0 point or better
quakes on the Richter scale.
Hot Creek is one of the creeks that
feeds Crowley Lake and it enters the Owens River just before the Owens turns
into Crowley lake at the low point of the Caldera. Hot creek is one of the premier
"Fly" fishing areas
in the world. Hot Creek changes from being clear ice cold water with lots of
fish into murky fishless, sulfur smelling hot spring at an area called the
"Thumper". The "Thumper" is a large deep pool of hot water with some
geological thing at the bottom which creates micro-earthquakes you can feel
when in the water and it moves about every 20 to 30 seconds. It's like an
upside-down geyser. Hot Creek also deposits huge
amounts of arsenic and other chemicals into the water. There is sulfur
bubbling into the water as well as several small geysers after Hot Creek meets
the "Thumper". All this water is headed to the city of Los Angeles as it
supplies the northern part of the city with water. Crowley Lake is a
large reservoir built and owned by the city of Los Angeles. The water from
Crowley Lake takes a 250 mile pipeline trip to the north end of the San
Fernando Valley.
Hot Creek is also the home of a State of California Fish Hatchery.
The Long Valley Caldera is a remnant of a gigantic volcano
that erupted about 700,000 years ago. Mammoth Mountain is the what's remaining
of the Southwestern rim of that volcano. The eruption 3/4 of a million years
ago sent large pieces of volcanic debris
as far as away Montana and spread volcanic ash throughout the mid-west and as far as the East Coast. The
Eastern Sierra is the
ancestral home of the Paiute Indian tribe. Glass Mountain on the north side of the Caldera
was where the tribe's warriors made their arrowheads. Millions of broken arrow heads are
have been found there at various areas on the back side of Glass Mountain.

introduction, bar-b-que and stargazing, also included is Saturday lunch and dinner as well
as Sunday's lunch.
Class
Sessions will be held Saturday afternoon 1- 7 PM and Sunday afternoon 12 - 6 PM. This
leaves mornings free for outdoor recreation. Saturday evening's discussion will be
held at a local Hot Springs. Only $495. Lodging and transportation not included.
